Regional Jets are fairly new to the world of aviation; they were recently introduced in the early 90s. In 1993 Comair was the first company to present the RJ to the air transportation world, and now there are 200 or more aircraft flown by Comair in operation within the United States. Although they typically need to operate over a longer distance than prop planes to produce a substantial profit, the potential for increased revenue with RJs is appealing. (Trigeiro, The Impact, 4) A Regional Jet typically has characteristics very close to some of the smaller airline jets you see today such as the Boeing 737. Their advantage comes when comparing fuel consumption to the number of people paying for the flight; often a 737 will fly the same route as a RJ and not have all of its seats full. The results are fewer passengers paying for a greater amount of fuel required for a larger jet. A RJ filled to capacity could carry the same number of people while using less fuel; this is obviously the more economical way to go.
